Hon. Justice Mamman Nasir, GCON, was born on July 2, 1929 at Katsina, in Katsina State. He attended Malumfashi Elementary School (1936-38), Katsina Middle School (1939-42), and Kaduna College, now Barewa College, Zaria, (1943-46). He studied at University College, Ibadan (1952-53), and Inns of Court, School of Law U.K. (1953-55), where he qualified as Utter Barrister in November 1955.
Hon. Justice Nasir worked as Engineering Assistant under Katsina Native Authority before he left to study Law. After qualifying as a Barrister in 1955, he began his legal career as Crown Counsel under Northern Nigerian Government in 1956. He became Senior Crown Counsel in 1959 and in 1961, he became Minister of Justice, Northern Nigeria, a position he held until the military take-over in 1966. Between 1968 and 1975, he was the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of North Central State, (now Kaduna and Katsina States).
Hon. Justice Nasir was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in July, 1975, and in March, 1978, he was deployed to the then newly established Court of Appeal. He was President of that Court until August, 1992 when he voluntarily retired at the age of 63 years.
In the course of his public service, Hon. Justice Nasir headed many ad hoc Commissions and Committees:
Chairman, Investigation of Assets of the Northern Nigerian Marketing Board (1968),
Chairman, Boundary Adjustment Committee (1977),
Chairman, Administration of Federal Capital Territory (1992),
Deputy Chairman, National Constitutional Conference (1994),
Chairman, Constitution Drafting Committee (1995),
Chairman, Transition Implementation Committee (1995).
Hon. Justice Mamman Nasir was appointed Galadiman Katsina and District of Malumfashi in 1992, a position that makes him one of the four Kingmakers of Katsina Emirate. He was conferred with the National Honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON in 1965, and Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger in 1992. He was a member of the 2014 National Conference.
